- In order to get everything on to this disc most of the example files
- and documents have been compressed using ArcFS.
-
- Before you can use the examples with Powerbase properly you will
- need to de-arc them to another disc. Although Powerbase can read the
- files from within an archive unless you have the read/write version
- of ArcFS it won't be able to write to the disc and this will
- obviously cause an error. If you just want to try out Powerbase you
- can do this without de-arcing but be prepared for error messages
- when it tries to update the data.
-
- If you aren't familiar with ArcFS I shall describe briefly how to de-arc
- the files, which is very easy. Double-click on the archive and ArcFS
- will automatically load itself and open a 'normal' filer window showing
- the contents of the archive. Simply drag these files to wherever you
- want them on your hard disc in the usual way. When you have done this
- click 'Menu' (the middle mouse button) over the ArcFS icon on the icon
- bar to display its menu, put the pointer on 'Close Arc' and slide it to
- the right to display the list of open archives and click on the one you
- have finished with to close it.
-
- If you don't have a hard disc the best way to proceed is to create a
- large RAM disc to use as an intermediary, otherwise you will spend a
- lot of time swapping discs. Proceed as for de-arc'ing to a hard disc
- except that you copy the files to your RAM disc. You can then copy
- each expanded archive from the RAM disc to a blank floppy disc. How
- large a RAM disc you create will depend on how much RAM your computer
- has and whether you can use 1.6Mb discs.
-
- The examples on this disc when de-arc'ed expand to about 400K
